It is possible to buy unique square shaped watermelons in Japan.
To make it happen, farmers grew the melons in glass boxes and the fruit then naturally assumed the same shape. Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan.
Each melon sells for 10,000 yen, equivalent to about $83. It is almost double, or even triple, that of a normal watermelon.

this is really neat, though i don’t think that i would be able to purchase one. i think that 5.99 is a little high for a watermelon, but 83.00 is a more than a bit steep for something that you will eat up or that will eventually rot.

Farmers in india should also try it with the help of Agro based industries and the price here would be much less and innovative. The shape is most comfortable for transportation and stocking, marketing and display. But how’s the taste?

I was just saying about a month ago as I was trying to cut a round watermelon, that I would rather have square shapes to facilitate slicing it!!!! The price is outrageous – hopefully someday the square fruits will be the norm. They’re easier to balance as you cut them, prevent nicks & cuts, and fit into the fridge in a better way. As someone above stated, they are also more efficient to store & transport. Great idea and a simple way to achieve the desired effect.

I like it but I hope it doesn’t take over. I’d rather have both. How will kids fit the rinds into their mouths to make smiles?

The shape was created to accomodate the smaller Japanese refrigerators. Obviously, it’s easier to store a square and takes up less space.

I guess if they’re going to lower the price of the cubic watermelons, they’ll then boost the productivity. The difference in the price is too ridiculous when the difference is just the appearance.
